... Local marine impacts...
Fowey Rocks light continues to report tropical storm force
sustained winds at 38 knots gusting to 43 knots at 12 noon EDT. On
the beaches, winds of 32 knots gusting to 37 knots were reported
at Virginia Key at 1 PM EDT. Tropical storm force winds,
especially in squalls, can be expected through the afternoon hours
as Fay moves north with slowly improving conditions this evening.
Seas of 8 to 10 feet and up to 12 feet in the Gulf Stream will
slowly be subsiding tonight and Wednesday as winds decrease.
The Lake Okeechobee level is near 11.4 feet, which is below normal
for this time of year. As the center of Fay approaches Lake
Okeechobee, winds will continue to increase with gusts as high as
50 mph, causing above normal lake levels on the northwestern shore. Fay
is forecast to pass over the lake today, causing the water levels
in the lake to fluctuate dramatically depending on the direction
and speed of the wind. Once the center of Fay passes the lake,
northwesterly winds on the back side of the center will begin to
blow water toward the southeast shore.
