Central MD Weather Conditions

UPDATE rain & snow in Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 14:59:GMT den 22. april 2012 +0
Well, the rain is here to stay, at least through Monday. My previous posts remain in effect. As the Low moves up the coast we will see the wind increase and the rain get heavier. Most of us could see a couple inches of rain, with some more locally heavier spots. The threat for thunderstorms is greatly diminished (practically zero).

Snow is still probable Sunday night through Monday evening, but accumulating only in Western MD and Southern PA. Some along the MD/PA line "could" see a dusting or so, while Baltimore could see a few flakes falling, but nothing more. Southern MD will have to resort to looking at pictures of snow flakes. "IF" there is an unexpected shift in the Low it could mean a bit more snow for Central MD, but for the record, I don't see it happening.

Since the rain yesterday was not as intense as predicted, threats of flooding are diminished with the exception of localized urban flooding in low areas or due to clogged sewers.

UPDATE to last post
Posted by: cws6196, 15:10:GMT den 21. april 2012 +0
If this were January I would be way excited right now! But, alas, it is April. With an incoming cold front and a strong Low moving up the coast forming into a Nor'easter, this would be a classic set up for a blizzard. But, we will see rain this weekend. This is an update to my post from yesterday.

TIMING: For most of us the rain should start around 2:00pm or so today. Thunderstorms later in the afternoon, and for those in Central MD a break from the rain tonight; those in S MD should have rain all night. Sunday's rain will be most of the day and heavy at times.

RAIN: The heaviest rain should be east of I-95, but any shift in the Low would bring that more to the west. Rain accumulations of a couple inches is to be expected by Monday. Some areas could see more than that.

THUNDERSTORMS: Most of us will see thunderstorms form later this afternoon and again possibly Sunday. The main concern from these storms will be strong gusty winds and possibly hail. Keep an eye on the sky.

SNOW: Yes, I used the "S" word. Those along the MD/PA border could see snow Sunday night into Monday. "Maybe" those around Baltimore will see some flakes as well, but NO accumulating snow for MD with the exception of the higher elevations in Western MD.

DYNAMICS: As I mentioned yesterday, a cold front, now in W MD, is moving east into central MD and a Low will form off the Carolina coast. The heating of this morning and southern moisture pushing up into the area will contribute to the storms later today. As the coastal Low moves north tomorrow it will drag in tropical moisture leading to the heavy rain precip. The exact position of the Low will therefore determine where heaviest rains will occur. Since this looks to be an intense Low, winds should remain strong Sunday.

There is the possibility for localized flooding, and so I foresee the NWS possibly issuing flooding products as the weekend progresses. Depending on the formation of storms later today, other watches/warnings could be posted.

Maryland weekend storms
Posted by: cws6196, 19:03:GMT den 20. april 2012 +0
Finally, we will be getting some much needed rain. Depending on where you are located in MD, some of us need to make up about 5 inches of rain. That wont happen this weekend, although some isolated locales could see around 3 inches of rainfall.

The rain, for most, will begin tomorrow afternoon and last until at least Monday, if not into Tuesday. There is also the chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon Saturday, with the biggest threat being strong wind gusts and hail.

As a low pressure system approaches our area, it's counter-clockwise rotation will bring in moist southern air Saturday. That moisture, coupled with the morning sun, will not only enhance our rain chances, but create the chance for strong thunderstorms. A cold front moves in later Saturday, dropping the temps and keeping the rain in the area through Monday. Cooler than normal temps will happen into next week, and even some snow, yes snow, will be possible in western MD and maybe into southern PA Monday.

I will have more details Saturday morning as the system approaches, but be aware of the storm threat in the afternoon, and the possibility for flooding come later Sunday.
