We do not often get contrails here : Auckland is more a destination rather a place planes fly high above.
Many of the contrails we do get are USAF planes flying to Christchurch in the South Island - the last stage of their flight to McMurdo Base. This one was heading north, so it could have been some of your boys heading home.
